Radio Tower Theft

When I finished my last post with the promise that there would be more to come, I was thinking more in terms of weeks or months rather than minutes or hours.

The latest story to hit the newswires is a theft in Pennsylvania in the town of Windber of a radio tower that has gone missing. The local police believe the 120-foot radio tower, which has sat unused for the last few years, has been the target of scrap metal thieves.

There seems to be no end to the ambitious nature, nor the lengths that thieves will go to to get their hands on items that most of us barely even notice, let alone attribute a dollar value to.

The radio transmission tower was a local landmark until it vanished one night.

The speculation is that the thieves threw cables over the guy wires of the tower and simply pulled it over with a truck before cutting it up, loading it and taking off. They can see burn marks and cut bolts at the scene which suggests that it has been broken up for haulage.

The report is that a transformer on the tower held as much as 300 pounds of copper, a valuable target of scrap metal thieves, it would seem.

Where most of us probably wouldn’t even notice some of the items that are being targeted by scrap metal thieves, the ambitious and industrious thieves are realising a good dollar value.

Copper Headstones Stolen

Another day, another story about the theft of metal from a cemetery. This isn’t an insignificant figure we’re talking about here.

this time thieves have walked away with 90 copper headstones worth over $100,000. When I say "walked away" obviously I meant loaded them into a truck and drove them away. 90 copper headstones would take some serious planning and muscle, one would think. The theft took place at Forest Lawn in Cypress, Los Angeles and they were taken out of storage at the Orange County Cemetery.

It wasn’t until they showed up at a recycling centre that they were traced back to the cemetery.

This comes on the back of the stories I was following last week about scrap metal thieves hitting cemeteries around San Francisco. The scale of this latest theft drives home the fact that this is not a small scale industry, these days.

I’m sure there will be more to come.

Chinese Calligraphy

As we saw during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, calligraphy is a particularly integral part in the history of China. It is one of the most challenging Chinese art forms for a foreigner to appreciate and even more difficult to master.

Unlike most other nations around the world Chinese calligraphy has been accepted as a form of art and calligraphy is part of the country’s cultural development. Calligraphy is an expressive art in that through the expression of the beauty of the lines and rhythms, calligraphy is a reflection of a person’s emotions, character and approach to life.

Chinese calligraphy is also a fine art form with exotic calligraphic inscriptions written on paper or stone that can be appreciated as incredibly artistic pieces.

Chinese calligraphy does not use a calligraphy pen, all lettering is performed by the Chinese soft haired calligraphy brush on absorbent paper and it is classically written in vertical columns from right to left.

The formation of each stroke in Chinese calligraphy is critical and is constructed to convey strength and boldness or delicacy and resilience. The sure firm hand can be as easily detected as the hesitant and wavering.

The Chinese view calligraphers with the same attitudes of criticism and respect the West accords its finest painters.

An indication of just how ancient an art-form Chinese calligraphy is can be ascertained when we learn that it can be traced to inscriptions on bones, tortoiseshell and bronzeware that belonged to the Shang Dynasty (16th – 11th century BC).

Help In the Bedroom

Okay guys, here’s a post that you should all sit up and take some notice over. It’s not the kind of opportunity that you’re going to get every day. I happened to stumble over this one while roaming aimlessly around the web. It a post that tells you 5 Ways To Improve A Woman’s Sex Drive.

That’s right. We all know that the majority of men have got it idling in high gear most of the time while their lady-friends are only lukewarm. Here’s the opportunity to stoke the old fires, so to speak.

The article acknowledges the use by many women of antidepressants which can account for quite a few instances of disinterest in the bedroom. Similarly, psychotherapy is an option. But this particular piece lists another 5 suggestions that may do the trick. (And no, Hessian sacks are not involved in any of them).
